Default Yahoo isn't what it used to be...

Some time back Yahoo was maybe the easiest search engine to have our old istes rank well in, today their results don't seem to be what they used to be. Sure this a reaction to the new MSN and competition now on two sides with Google, but they need not ruin their results were at once easy to rank and at the same time very relevant.

During the course of time since this post was made I have noticed a significant change in the breadth of listings on many if not most our client websites in the Yahoo engine. There was a time when with Yahoo you could rank quickly, highly for a breadth of terms, while today they seem to have limited in some way how broadly your site will appear in search results. Our sites are still ranked at the top for there primary terms but seem to have lost some rank for many of their secondary terms which obviously has reduced referal traffic from Google.

I have to attribute the change to a move on Yahoos part to become more competative with Google. And like Google and their girations that negativley impacted many competitive sites 1 and 2 years ago Yahoo can be expected to have a time of sorting out there new (?) if not problematic search results.

Well almost a year has passed and Yahoo still hasn't returned to the broad range of terms it once ranked all websites for. While our websites still rank well for primary search terms secondary and third tier search terms seem to have dissappeared.

Interestingly enough, we had a website that appeared to garner a penalty for dup content and had fallen out of favor in Google. During the period it was down on Google the same website had alot of referals from Yahoo, while other of our client websites in the same target market got fewer. Months later as the subject website returned to top rankings on Google it simultaneously is falling out of Yahoo's favor. Go figure? Does Yahoo not like sites that rank highly on G?

Best of luck with Mortgage SEO on Yahoo!
